We play dominoes almost everywhere - at home, in the garden, on the street. But few people know that even world championships are held for this game. Moreover, local domino enthusiasts successfully participate in these competitions.
Idman.Biz took an interview from the chairman of the "Baku" Domino Club Barat Abdullayev.
- Barat muallim, how should we present you - as the head of the "Baku" Domino Club, or as the president of the Domino Federation?
- I have been the president of the Azerbaijan Domino Federation for a long time. But the Ministry of Youth and Sports decided to unite all board games into one structure - the Board Games Federation. I don't think this federation has been created yet. Therefore, let's limit ourselves to the "Baku" Domino Club - we have always operated within the law.
- Do the club's domino masters participate in international tournaments? There has been no news from them lately...
- You are right. Our last great success was at the world championship held in the Dominican Republic in 2009. Rahman Alakarov and Mehman Mammadov won silver medals in pairs.
Since world championships are mainly held in Central and South America, we often did not have the financial means to send our team to these competitions. Nevertheless, we also participated in the world championships held in Mexico and Cuba in subsequent years.
- Why don't you ask the ministry for support in this matter?
- We do not have the authority for this - we currently operate as a club, not as a federation. But I hope that the situation will change after the Board Games Federation is created. Currently, we organize national championships and two traditional annual tournaments - the "Victory Cup" (which will be held for the fifth time on November 8 this year) and the "Barat Cup".
- Have you named the tournament after yourself?
- I not only named the tournament after myself, but I also won the first competition (laughs). 24 domino players participated in the first "Barat Cup". With this victory, I wanted to show the importance of the competition - that is, if you want to win, you have to play as well as me.
Let me add that the word "domino player" has firmly entered our daily language. No one says "domino player" anymore, everyone says "domino player" - like football player, basketball player, weightlifter.
- What is the difference between international dominoes and our traditional "101" game?
- There are many differences! First, in the international game, the game lasts up to 200 points. Secondly, when the game ends, the "empty" stone remaining in the opponent's hand does not bring any points. I don't know who invented the 10 points in our game - but it's completely illogical. Why exactly 10, why not 50 or 90? (laughs)
In addition, in the international domino game, each winning pair starts the game in turn, not the previous winner every time like us. Also, those who draw the stone with the most points start the first game, not those who come out with "a pair".
