"The Ganja tournament is a selection for the national team for us."
These words were said by Natig Bagirov, advisor to the president of the Azerbaijan Judo Federation (ACF), in a statement to journalists about the European Judo Cup among juniors, which started today in Ganja.
The advisor said that the selection will be made by the coaching staff.
"The coaches will watch the athletes' performances and select those with the highest potential among them. These judokas will represent our country in international competitions," he said in a statement to AZERTAC.
The ACF official said that the Belarusian national team joined the competition at the special invitation of the federation: "As you know, I used to work as the head coach in the Belarusian national team. It is very gratifying to see the athletes of this country competing in our country. I would like this tradition to continue from year to year, and judokas from 40-50 countries to compete in our tournaments."
It should be noted that 269 judokas (180 boys, 89 girls) from 10 countries participate in the international competition held in Ganja Sports Palace.
On the first day of the tournament, boys compete in the weight categories of 50, 55, 60, 66 kilograms, and girls in the weight categories of 40, 44, 48 and 52 kilograms.
In the European Cup, along with our country, judokas from Belarus, Bulgaria, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Portugal, Tajikistan, Turkey and the United States are testing their strength in 16 weight categories. Azerbaijan, which is hosting a similar competition for the fourth time, is represented by 127 athletes in the tournament. The European Cup will end on April 5.
