The Azerbaijan Chess Championship among men and women will kick off today.
Idman.Biz reports that the competition is being organized jointly by the Azerbaijan Chess Federation and the Ministry of Youth and Sports of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
The championship, which will be held from February 6-22, will take place in Baku, in the "Rotunda" hall of the "Landmark" hotel. The competition will be held according to the Olympic system, based on FIDE game rules.
30 chess players will participate in the men's competition, and 16 in the women's competition. As in the past year, the country's leading chess players will compete for the championship this year as well. Shahriyar Mammadyarov, the world rapid and U20 champion, three-time European team champion, Rauf Mammadov, six-time Azerbaijani champion and three-time European team champion, and Eltaj Safarli, a member of the national team and winner of the continental championship, will participate in the men's tournament. In the women's competition, the current Azerbaijani champion Gunay Mammadzada, the winner of the individual European Championship Ulviyya Fataliyeva, the U20 world champion Govhar Beydullayeva and other famous chess players will compete.
It should be noted that the total prize fund of the Azerbaijan Championship is 92,000 manats. 62,000 manats of this is allocated to the men's competition, and 30,000 manats to the women's competition.
