The Azerbaijan national women's wrestling team, which won 2 gold medals at the U20 European Championship held in Caorle, Italy, has returned to their homeland.
Idman.biz reports that a welcoming ceremony and briefing for the team was held at Heydar Aliyev International Airport.
Acting head coach Togrul Asgarov said that the wrestlers did their best in the competition and continued: "Our path is the path to the Olympics. There is no stopping on this path. We have stated in our previous interviews that our team is young, our path is long, open and bright. We are waiting for the U20 and adult world championships. Our time is very short. We will try to do more than what we can."
Senior coach Rovshan Umudov said that women's wrestling is developing: "Teenage girls are growing up. I think that in a short time we will be able to participate in competitions with a full team. Women's wrestling will have its say. Just as we are in the top ranks of the European Championship in the team standings in freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling, our women's wrestling team will have its say in the U17 and U20 age groups in a year or two."
European champion Gunay Gurbanova said that the competition went very well: "Thank God, I was able to become the European champion for the second time this year. I am very happy. I would like to thank the entire coaching staff and the federation management. My next goal is to perform successfully at the U20 World Championship. We will prepare for this competition. God willing, it will be good."
European champion Ruzanna Mammadova said that the competition was very difficult: "We faced very strong opponents. But thank God, the result was as we wanted. I could not participate in the last training camp due to injury. If I had participated, the competition could have been easier. I won again. I am very happy about this. My next goal is first of all the upcoming World Youth Championship, then the U23 World Championship. But the main goal is to win a license for the Olympics and represent our country properly."
