The Azerbaijan Cycling Federation is conducting an investigation into the positive doping sample found in Azerbaijani cyclist Artyom Proskuryakov.
Parviz Musayev, head of the federation's press service, informed Idman.Biz about this.
"We are currently investigating how prohibited substances were detected in Proskuryakov's body. At the moment, the cyclist has been removed from the Azerbaijani national team," said P. Musayev.
It should be noted that the 18-year-old Azerbaijani cyclist has been temporarily suspended from competitions by the International Cycling Union (UCI). This is due to the detection of methamphetamine in his analysis.
The positive result in Artyom Proskuryakov was determined in two samples taken during "intelligence tests" at the UCI Road World Championships in Kigali, Rwanda, in September of this year. He has been allowed to request an analysis of the B samples.
The tests were carried out after the youth road group race. Proskuryakov did not finish that race, and took 41st place in the individual race.
Interestingly, the Azerbaijan National Anti-Doping Agency (AMADA) checked Artyom Proskuryakov for prohibited substances in early July of this year after he became the national champion.
"AMADA tested all the prize-winners of the Azerbaijan Championship at that time, and no prohibited substances were detected in the athletes, including Artyom. That is, at that time he was completely clean," P. Musayev emphasized.
Regarding whether all members of the Azerbaijani national team will be retested after the incident with Proskuryakov, Musayev noted that this is within the authority of AMADA.
"The Federation, for its part, will provide all kinds of support to this process," he added.
