The Azerbaijan National Paralympic Committee (NPC) has commented on the non-admission of para-judo athlete Ilkin Nasibov to the European Championship.
"Report" reports that the press service of the organization has released information on this matter.
The NPC stated that it is necessary for every athlete who wants to compete in Paralympic sports to undergo medical classification for that para-sport:
"Medical classification is considered a natural process and applies not only to Azerbaijani athletes but to all participants. Before the European Championship held in Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, four of our athletes participated in medical classification. A total of 8 para-judo athletes represented our country at the continental championship. Including three athletes who passed medical classification, 2 young athletes competed in the international arena for the first time. Our para-judo athlete Ilham Zakiyev won a gold medal and had the anthem played in Tbilisi, while Dursadaf Karimova won a silver medal. It was only revealed that Ilkin Nasibov, born in 2005, does not have sufficient visual impairment to compete in the J2 category of para-judo. Athletes with partial visual impairments compete in this category."
It was also emphasized by the agency that the process of adapting to the updated rules regarding medical classification is carried out with great sensitivity by the National Paralympic Committee, all necessary steps are being taken to accelerate this process, and discussions are regularly held in this direction between federations and associations:
"As the NPC, we have always been in favor of transparency and will continue to take the necessary measures for the successful performance of our Paralympians in the international arena. We ask media representatives to approach such news with sensitivity and to take into account the position of the Committee before publicizing it."
