Dota Arai has rapidly entered the world's judo elite. After moving to the senior level, he won his first victory at the "Grand Slam" tournament in Baku last year. In total, he already has three gold medals in the World Tour stages. This makes Arai, who competes in the under 100 kg weight category, one of the favorites of the World Championship to be held in Baku.
Idman.Biz interviewed 21-year-old talented Japanese judoka Dota Arai.
- You started the season with a victory at the "Grand Slam" tournament in Paris. Do you consider this result a good indicator for the whole year?
- Of course, the "Grand Slam" was a very important start. Especially the tournament in Paris - after Tokyo, it is one of the most prestigious stages of the World Tour. The success there gave me great confidence and showed that the preparation was done correctly. But I understand that this is only the beginning of the year and there are more serious tests ahead.
- Now all attention is focused on the World Championship to be held in Baku. How will you prepare for it?
- Preparation for Baku will be systematic. We will pay special attention to tactics, analysis of potential rivals, and physical preparation. We will focus on the "Golden Score" fight and maintaining the pace throughout the match. It is important to be ready for the championship not only physically, but also in the right psychological state.
- You celebrate your victories in an unusual way - by hitting the ball with a baseball bat. How did this tradition come about?
- I loved baseball as a child, and this gesture is a memory from those times. For me, this is a symbol of "I took my chance" and realizing the opportunity. This is not intended to offend anyone, it is just to express joy and emotions after a tough fight.
- One of the leaders in the 100 kg weight category is Olympic champion Zelim Kotsoyev. Are you expecting a meeting with him?
- Of course. Kotsoyev is one of the strongest judokas in this weight. He is very strong both physically and tactically. Fights with such high-level opponents are motivation and development opportunities for me. If we meet, it will be a serious test.
- What do you expect from the Azerbaijani national team in general? Can they compete with Japan at the World Championship at home?
- The level of the Azerbaijani national team has increased significantly in recent years. They have strong leaders in several weight categories, and the support of home stands provides additional motivation. I think they can be especially dangerous on the tatami where they are hosts. Competition in world judo is very high, and any strong team can fight for leadership.
- This year, the Olympic selection stage also begins. Is participating in Los Angeles in the nearest years your main goal?
- Yes, of course. The Olympics is the main goal of every athlete. The road there is long and difficult, and it is important to maintain stability throughout the entire selection period. I will go step by step towards this dream and try to represent Japan at the highest level.
