Vasif Bagirov (57 kg), the U20 European champion in freestyle wrestling, gave an interview to the website of the Azerbaijan Wrestling Federation. Sport24.az reports that the young athlete stated that his goal is the world championship.
- How is the preparation for the U20 World Championship going? How ready do you feel for the competition in percentage terms?
- Our preparation is going according to plan. We are doing intensive training both technically and physically. Every day I get one step closer to my goal.
- Three years ago you were the U17 European and world champion. You can repeat the same result in U20 this year. Do you think it will work out? What is needed for this?
- My faith is complete. Of course, talent alone is not enough for success. It requires great effort, a correct preparation plan. I am currently working on this.
- Which wrestlers will be your main competitors on the way to the world championship?
- Among my competitors are several well-known world and European medalists. I will compete with very strong athletes in this category. Each of them has their own advantages. I approach each of them with the same seriousness.
- Do you have any plans to try yourself in a higher weight in the future?
- So far, I feel comfortable at 57 kg. I have many goals in this weight. But if my body and results allow in the future, I would like to try myself in a higher weight as well.
- What qualities are you trying to develop to become stronger?
- With daily training, I increase both my strength and speed. I am working hard to be more resilient. Most importantly, I am preparing myself psychologically for the competition.
- Do you see yourself at the Olympic Games to be held in 3 years?
- Yes, this is one of my biggest goals, like every athlete. I am preparing very hard to get there. I believe that I will see the reward of my hard work on the Olympic carpet.
