The transitional flag of the World Sumo Championship will be handed over to Azerbaijan at the World Championship in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, in September.
This was stated by Ulvi Agamirov, Vice-President of the Azerbaijan Association of Japanese Martial Arts and Culture, in his statement to "Report".
He spoke about his participation in the presentation ceremony of the World Championship to be held in Baku in 2026 at the "Sumo Expo 2025" event held in Osaka, Japan:
"The interest in the event was very high. Many guests attended the meeting. At the same time, on August 5, the presentation of the World Championship was held in the Azerbaijani pavilion operating within the framework of the "Osaka Expo" exhibition and was highly appreciated by visitors. The championship's promotional video and official mascot, "Azumo", have already been introduced to the public. It is a symbol of strength and hospitality."
The federation official said that they have started preparations:
"Preparations have already started. The official flag handover will take place at the World Championship to be held in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, in September of this year. The public will be regularly informed about the progress of the preparation process and issues related to the World Cup."
It should be noted that at the "Sumo Expo 2025" event, only five of the 158 countries participating in the expo - Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Mongolia, Senegal and Japan - came together at the event with professional athletes and official representatives.
