After the national women's wrestling championship was held without the participation of female athletes, the impression was created that our women's wrestling is currently in a period of stagnation and there are no athletes to go to the mat.
So, is this really the case and is there a competitive youth in women's wrestling?
With these questions, Idman.Biz turned to Rovshan Umudov, the head coach of the U-20 national women's wrestling team.
"I would say that, on the contrary, we currently have very good athletes not only among adults, but also among young people. Ruzanna Mammadova (62 kg), Gunay Gurbanova (59 kg), Esra Mammadli (55 kg) are already successfully competing among adults today. Fidan Babayeva can create competition for Gunay. That is, there are immediately two strong athletes in one weight category, which has not been observed for a long time. I'm not even talking about Zahra Karimzade (76 kg), who represents women's wrestling in the heavy weight categories. In addition, we currently have 17-year-old girls who can compete at the same level as 20-year-olds," said Rovshan Umudov.
