Our Greco-Roman wrestlers, who won a set of medals at the U17 World Championship held in Athens, the capital of Greece, have returned to their homeland.
Idman.biz reports that a welcoming ceremony was held for the national team at Heydar Aliyev International Airport.
The team's head coach and award-winning athletes shared their thoughts on the competition.
Taleh Israfilov, head coach:
"The competition went normally. We surpassed all European countries. Although we took 3rd place in the team score at the European Championship. In this competition, Asian countries performed better. Together with Kyrgyzstan, we took 4-5th places. I express my gratitude to the leadership of the Azerbaijan Wrestling Federation and the Ministry of Youth and Sports for their support. The CIS Games are waiting for us ahead. We will discuss future plans with the management after that competition".
Ali Nazarov, world champion:
"The competition went well. Everything was to my liking. I thank everyone who worked hard on me and supported me. I am grateful to all our coaches, especially my personal coach Azer Huseynov. When I reached the final, I was thinking of nothing but victory. I wanted to be a world champion. Thank God, I achieved that too".
Hikmat Hagverdiyev, world runner-up:
"I went to be a champion. But I took second place. I am grateful for that too. I could have been a champion. I gave my best in the final. But I settled for a silver medal. I dedicate this medal to everyone who has worked hard on me".
Abdurrahman Huseynli, world third place:
"We prepared very well for this competition. We express our gratitude to the federation management for the conditions they created for us. We are also grateful to the coaches of the national team and Rafiq Huseynov, who was with us in the competition. I am satisfied with my result, but I went to the competition to be a world champion. I could not reach the final due to certain technical errors. God willing, I will work on these errors and turn this bronze into gold".
