At the U-23 European Championship held in Zrenjanin, Serbia, at least one set of medals is expected from Azerbaijani Greco-Roman wrestlers.
This was stated by the head coach of the national team, Nuraddin Rajabov, in an interview with the "Report" correspondent sent to the competition.
The specialist stated that certain rotations were made in the team's composition and opportunities were given to young people:
"Compared to last year, some of our athletes who won gold medals are not participating here for certain reasons. We have included young wrestlers in the team, which is part of our new strategy. We want to make certain changes. Our goal is to adapt new and young athletes to the team by the Summer Olympic Games. The European Championship is really difficult, we have strong enough opponents and we are analyzing them. Most of the opponents here are also children who have won medals at the adult level. Nevertheless, we will fight for high results."
N. Rajabov spoke about the number of medals:
"We have seen in practice that sometimes an athlete you think will win a medal 100 percent loses in the first match. But our main goal is to win at least one set of medals. Hopefully, everything will be fine."
The head coach also assessed the success of freestyle wrestlers and the chances of the women's national team:
"I congratulate our freestyle wrestling team, they came second in the team standings, which is a great result. Our female wrestlers have also started the competition well. I believe that they will also have a gold medal."
It should be noted that Azerbaijani Greco-Roman wrestlers will join the competition at the U-23 European Championship tomorrow.
