There has always been a sweet competition between Turkish and Azerbaijani athletes.
This was stated by Muttalip Yerlikaya, the head coach of the Turkish Greco-Roman wrestling team, in his statement to the "Report" employee who was sent to the U-23 European Championship held in Zrenjanin, Serbia.
He shared his views on the performance of wrestlers from both countries in the competition:
"We have always had a sweet competition with Azerbaijan. No matter how much we compete, we always support each other with the principle of 'two states, one nation'. We rejoice when they win, and we are sad when they lose. At the beginning of the competition, things were a little difficult for Azerbaijan as well, but they recovered later. But we couldn't do it. I hope that in future tournaments, especially in the European Championship for adults, Azerbaijan and Turkey will share the top two places on the podium."
The expert also emphasized that he will make changes in the team's composition in the next competitions:
"We couldn't hold very good meetings here, we had a lot of defeats. Only Azat Sarıyer reached the semi-finals and lost to the Danish representative. However, we expected him to reach the final. He showed a very weak result. Our preparation was not bad, but when things don't go well from the beginning of the competition, it is difficult to recover as a team. We will make some changes in the squad and show a better result at the World Championship. Last year, the Azerbaijani team was first, and we were second. I hope it will be for the best for both countries."
