Azerbaijani athlete Murad Ahmadiyev achieved a magnificent result at the World Greco-Roman Wrestling Championship held in Zagreb.
Idman.biz reports that Ahmadiyev, competing in the 97 kg weight category, defeated Italian representative Nikoloz Kakhelashvili 4:1 in the first match. He then defeated Kyrgyz Uzur Dzhuzupbekov with a score of 5:1.
Ahmadiyev caused a great sensation by defeating world and European champion, Armenian wrestler Artur Aleksanyan in the 1/4 finals. The match ended with a score of 3:3, but according to the rules, the victory was given to the Azerbaijani wrestler because he scored the last point. (Note: According to wrestling rules, in a tie, the athlete who scores the last point is declared the winner.)
It should be reminded that 33-year-old Aleksanyan has dominated this weight category for many years and has repeatedly made headlines with provocative actions against Azerbaijani wrestlers. This victory was remembered as the first historical success of Azerbaijani wrestlers over Aleksanyan. His most sensational move was at the 2016 Rio Olympics – after becoming a champion, Aleksanyan came to the award ceremony wearing a T-shirt with a picture of an Armenian soldier who died in the April battles.
