The World Wrestling Championship that ended in Zagreb raised more questions than answers. In particular, Azerbaijan was once again longing for a gold medal in freestyle wrestling.
Should this situation be considered satisfactory? Are there too many legionnaires in our national team?
Idman.biz learned the opinions of the world and two-time European champion, well-known freestyle wrestler Khazar Isayev about the issue:
"You know, everything is relative. Only 3-4 years ago, the situation in freestyle wrestling was worse than it is now. Yes, there was no gold medal in Zagreb, but at least one of our athletes reached the final, and three wrestlers won bronze medals. I think the head coach of the team, Khetag Gazyumov, should be given time until the Olympics. The main indicator of success or failure in Olympic sports is the results at the Olympic Games," said Khazar muallim.
Answering the question about legionnaires, Isayev said: "There have always been problems in freestyle wrestling in the heavyweight divisions, and it is normal for legionnaires to compete in those weight categories. But I believe that Azerbaijan has always had its own wrestlers in the 74 kg weight category, and there are still some now. There is no need to "nationalize" anyone in this category."
