Azerbaijani freestyle wrestlers could have won several gold medals at the U-23 European Championship held in Zrenjanin, Serbia.
According to the information of the "Report" employee sent to the competition, this was stated by Jabrayil Hasanov, the senior coach of the Azerbaijani freestyle wrestling team, in his statement to journalists.
He highly appreciated the team's performance, but noted that some athletes missed the gold medal:
"Thank you for your support, this is a great success for us. Our team performed well, but the result could have been even better. For example, Yusif Dursunov in the 125 kg weight category missed the gold medal due to a technical mistake. We also expected a great result from Aghanazar Novruzov. He is a European medalist among adults and was one of the most realistic candidates for a gold medal here. For some reason, he could not perform as we wanted in this competition. The U-23 World Championship and the European Championship among adults are ahead. We will work on the mistakes".
C. Hasanov thanked the leadership of the Azerbaijan Wrestling Federation for the conditions created for the preparation process:
"The Federation created all conditions for us. We had no difficulties in terms of holding training camps or providing vitamins. I express my gratitude to the federation management for this support".
The senior coach emphasized that expectations were almost met:
"Most of our expectations have been met. We were expecting not just one, but several gold medals. As I mentioned, Yusif Dursunov and Aghanazar Novruzov could have also become champions. But something was missing. God willing, we will prepare at a high level for the upcoming competitions and try to show better results."
It should be noted that Azerbaijani U-23 freestyle wrestlers finished the European Championship with 8 medals. Ali Tsokayev (92 kg) became the European champion, Jeyhun Allahverdiyev (61 kg), Vasif Baghirov (57 kg), Sabuhi Amiraslanov (79 kg), Yusif Dursunov (125 kg) won silver, Musa Agayev (65 kg), Ramik Heybatov (70 kg) and Zafar Aliyev (97 kg) won bronze medals.Cə
