Azerbaijani sumo wrestler Huseyn Agayev participated in the 16th Hakuho Cup in Tokyo.
Idman.Biz reports with reference to AZERTAC that this is the first participation of Azerbaijani athletes in the Hakuho Cup, which is considered one of the prestigious sumo competitions. At the competition held on February 7-8, Huseyn Agayev won against his Japanese and Brazilian rivals in the first 3 matches of the competition for 14-15 year old athletes and advanced to the 1/16 finals. Our athlete lost to another Japanese wrestler, one of the main favorites of the competition, in that round.
Ulvi Agamirov, vice-president of the Azerbaijan Japanese Martial Arts and Culture Association, is participating in the competition as a judge. He has been the only foreign judge in the Hakuho tournament for 3 years now.
It should be noted that interest in sumo wrestling has been increasing in our country in recent years. According to the decision of the International Sumo Federation, the world sumo championship will be held in Azerbaijan for the first time in October this year.
