The Azerbaijani arm wrestling team performed better than expected at the World Championship held in Baku.
This was stated by the head coach of the team, Samir Babayev, which won 84 medals (25 gold, 32 silver, 27 bronze), in an interview with "Report".
He said that they had predicted in advance that they would win a lot of medals:
"As a head coach, I was satisfied with the results. Because for the first time, at the World Championship we hosted, the Azerbaijani team surpassed all rivals in the team standings and became the winner of the cup. Our athletes won a total of 25 gold, 32 silver and 27 bronze medals. The results were better than we expected. We had predicted in advance that we would win a lot of medals. But I didn't think there would be so many. The athletes prepared responsibly for the competition. Therefore, the results were encouraging. Both the youth and adult teams won. And overall, the Azerbaijani team won the world championship."
The head coach stated that the next goal is the European Championship:
"No competitions are planned until the end of this year. The Azerbaijani championship is scheduled to be held in March 2026. Athletes who distinguish themselves in the national championship will participate in the European Championship in May. It has not yet been determined in which country this tournament will be held. It is planned to be organized in Romania. Our next goal is the European Championship."
It should be noted that more than 400 athletes from 30 countries competed in the World Championship.
