Gunay Gurbanova: I dream of becoming the first female wrestler to win Olympic gold

An interview with Gunay Gurbanova, who won a gold medal at the U-20 European Championship held in Caorle, Italy, to AZERTAC

- You became the European champion for the second time. What are your impressions?

- My goal in this European Championship was also a gold medal. I wasn't thinking of any other medal. I am happy and proud to be on the highest step of the podium again.

- Did you expect this result from yourself for the second time?

- Yes, as I mentioned, I was only thinking about the gold medal. I was wrestling only for the championship in the tournament.

- Some time ago, Maria Stadnik, one of the prominent athletes of Azerbaijani women's wrestling, was appointed as a coordinator in the national team. What can you say about this appointment?

- Maria Stadnik is an athlete who has won enough medals in the history of Azerbaijani women's wrestling. I believe that she will play a big role in the success of the girls in the future.

- Although your weight categories are not the same, do you see yourself as a successor to Maria Stadnik?

- As you know, there is no Olympic gold in the history of Azerbaijani women's wrestling. At the same time, no local girls have participated in this competition. My dream is to participate in the Olympic Games and win the first gold medal.

- How do you assess the current state of Azerbaijani women's wrestling?

- Women's wrestling is developing day by day in our country. This is an undeniable fact. Girls competing in every age group are already able to win medals of various grades in international tournaments. If we continue like this, I am sure that in a few years we will have world and European champions among adults.
