Azerbaijani Greco-Roman wrestler Elmir Aliyev (55 kg), who won a gold medal at the U-23 World Championship held in Novi Sad, Serbia, took revenge on his Russian opponent in the final.
The athlete himself stated this in an interview with "Report".
He also expressed his gratitude to those who supported him:
"I express my gratitude to everyone who showed their support. We prepared very seriously for the competition. It was my first time participating in the U-23 World Championship. Nevertheless, I was fortunate enough to become a champion. I had previously won a bronze medal at the European Championship. I missed the gold medal due to a small mistake. This time, I faced the Russian wrestler whom I had faced and lost to in the final of that European Championship in the decisive match of the World Championship and took revenge. In general, my rivals were strong. Weak athletes do not come to the World Championship. Everyone was showing their performance. I defeated my first opponent, a Chinese athlete, with a complete advantage. Then I defeated the Uzbek and Iranian wrestlers in the semi-finals. My next goals are to first become the winner of the Azerbaijan Championship among adults. I hope that I will win a ticket to the European Championship."
It should be noted that E. Aliyev won the gold medal by defeating Russian Alibek Amirov (UWW) with a score of 3:2 in the final.
