Aida Karimova, a Ukrainian athlete of Azerbaijani descent, is rapidly becoming one of the most notable names in the world of women's wrestling.
Idman.Biz reports that Aida, born in Donbas, raised in Toretsk, and a graduate of the Donetsk Higher School of Olympic Reserve named after Sergei Bubka, competes in the 50 kg weight category. This is the weight category where Ukrainian Maria Stadnik, who represented Azerbaijan for many years, shone.
Aida Karimova won a bronze medal at the World Wrestling Championships among athletes under 23 in Novi Sad, Serbia, becoming the first Ukrainian to achieve such success in this tournament. Although she lost to American Audrey Jimenez (5:2) in the semi-finals, she later defeated Venezuelan Noxalis Loyo Jimenez (9:7) in the bronze medal match, taking a place on the podium.
In 2024, Karimova won a brilliant victory at the European Youth Championships held in Novi Sad, without giving her opponents a single point. In the final, she confidently defeated Swiss Svenja Jungo (7:0), and before that, she defeated Romanian Nicoletta Baya and Russian athlete Violetta Biryukova with neutral status. Later, at the World Youth Championships in Pontevedra, Spain, Aida won a bronze medal, surpassing Indian athlete Muskan.
While still 15 years old, Karimova won the title of European Champion in 2019 in the 43 kg weight category. Even then, Karimova demonstrated her unique style - aggressive technique and the ability to finish matches ahead of time.
According to the Azerbaijani diaspora, Aida's father is from Yevlakh. Perhaps it is this dual identity - the synthesis of the Ukrainian school with Azerbaijani endurance and temperament - that makes her wrestling special: dynamic, characteristic, and impressive.
After European gold and world championship bronze medals, Aida Karimova has established herself as one of the leaders among the young generation of women's wrestling. In 2025, she is no longer just a rising star, but a strong, real contender for the podium among adults at European and world championships. Who knows, perhaps in the near future Ukrainian and Azerbaijani wrestling will unite again, but this time in the person of the young and ambitious Aida Karimova.
