US President Donald Trump has stated that if China's influence in Canada increases, ice hockey, one of the country's main symbols, could be endangered.
Idman.Biz reports that Trump emphasized in a conversation with journalists that he does not want such a scenario to happen.
"We have a good relationship with China, with President Xi Jinping. But we don't want China to take over Canada. If the agreement they're expecting happens, China will take control of Canada. And the first thing they'll do is get rid of ice hockey," the US President said.
It should be noted that hockey is considered one of the main elements of Canada's national identity. Donald Trump is not the first to come to the fore with this type of ironic and harsh statement against the background of topics related to the possible rapprochement of Canada with China. In recent times, discussions on this topic have intensified after disagreements between Ottawa and Washington over Greenland and trade duties.
