Today, the National Pumse Championship among juniors, youth and adults started at the Sports and Health Club of the Ministry of Emergency Situations (MES SC). A total of 130 athletes from 22 clubs are competing in the competition in individual and trio programs in three age categories (12–14 years, 15–17 years and 18–30 years).
The opening ceremony of the event began with the singing of the National Anthem of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
ATF Vice President Hikmat Samadov greeted the participants and guests with his opening speech. He spoke about the large-scale work done by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, President of the National Olympic Committee of Azerbaijan, Mr. Ilham Aliyev in the field of physical education and sports development, and emphasized that this policy has introduced Azerbaijan to the world as a country with sports traditions.
"The Azerbaijan Taekwondo Federation pays special attention to the development of pumse, which is one of the main directions of taekwondo, along with combat. As you know, since 2023, pumse has started to be developed more systematically and purposefully in our country. The main purpose of holding this competition is to further popularize this direction and increase the experience of our athletes," said Hikmat Samadov.
He added that Azerbaijani representatives have also achieved success in pumse in the international arena this year. Thus, at the ISF U15 Gymnasiade Sports Games held in Serbia this year, our national team consisting of teenagers won a total of 13 gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze medals. Of these medals, 10 gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze medals were won in combat, and 3 gold medals were won in the pumse program. These 3 gold medals won in individual and trio programs in pumse are considered the first such success in the history of Azerbaijan taekwondo.
The competition will conclude today.
