The Council of the International Skating Union (ISU) may give the green light for Russian figure skater Veronika Zhilina to compete for the Azerbaijani national team.
Idman.biz reports that the organization will discuss the issue of the athlete's future with the Russian Figure Skating Federation at a meeting to be held on June 4-5.
The neighboring country's federation refused to allow the 17-year-old athlete to change her sports citizenship, despite her obtaining an Azerbaijani passport. The Azerbaijan Winter Sports Federation has hired a lawyer regarding the matter and, with his support, has applied to the ISU for Zhilina's transfer to our team. Veronika even paid q million rubles for training costs as part of the Russian team.
If the ISU makes a positive decision, Zhilina will compete in international competitions as part of the Azerbaijani team. Thanks to a special certificate, the figure skater will have the right to compete in the qualifying tournament for the 2026 Olympic Games in Beijing this fall.
