"The national team is playing its first game. Iceland is a suitable opponent for us. They may be considered favorites on paper, but we have great faith in our team." These words were said by Vagif Sadigov in his statement to Sport24.az.
The chairman of the Coaches Committee shared his thoughts on the qualifying match of DÇ-2026, which the national team will hold against Iceland away:
"Achieving a successful result in the first game is a psychologically important factor. An interesting match awaits us. Fernando Santos and his team understand the importance of the match. We could not achieve successful results during the preparation period. But this is an official game. There will be a completely different motivation. If Santos made some changes to the squad in previous games, he will form the optimal squad in this match. The abolition of the legionnaire limit had to happen sooner or later. Time will tell how useful it is. We did not feel a big difference in the first rounds of the Premier League. Those who deserve to play in the main squad got the chance to wear the uniform again. The task of local football players is to prove that they are strong and to win the competition."
It should be noted that the Iceland-Azerbaijan match, which will be held on September 5, will start at 22:45 Baku time.
