"Even if the team finishes the championship in third place, we want to win the cup. We are not playing just to get to Europe."
These words were said by Faiq Hajiyev, the captain of Turan Tovuz.
The 27-year-old defender spoke about the match in the 27th round of the Misli Premier League, in which they defeated Sumgayit 2:1. He also shared his feelings about playing his 100th match for the team.
"I knew I was going to play my 100th game, but I didn't expect it to be announced. It was nice for me. I hope I get to play more games. It is gratifying to win an important victory on such a day," he said in a statement to futbolinfo.az.
Hajiyev also touched upon the return match against Zira in the semi-finals of the Azerbaijan Cup:
"We have a match against Araz-Nakhchivan ahead, then we will prepare for the cup game against Zira. Anything is possible in football. Our goal is to pass the stage. We are not afraid of anyone, we believe in ourselves. We will fight to the end. If we have a chance, why not win the cup? We have not yet fully analyzed the first game. In the return match, we will try to perform better by following the coach's instructions. We intend to fight head-to-head against our opponents. Teams at the bottom also have a chance to reach us, so we must be careful."
Hajiyev also commented on the frequent incorrect referee decisions they encounter:
"We don't pay attention to the referees. It is more important to watch our own game. If we want to be successful, we must beat everyone. Mistakes can happen, but we must not drop out of the game and take advantage of opportunities. The referee made mistakes in the first match. But I don't think it will have a psychological effect on us if he is assigned to our game again."
