Cabo Verde defender Pico Lopes received a call-up to the national team after an unexpected message on social media.
According to Idman.Biz, citing Sky Sports, the national team manager wrote a letter to the football player, offering him a chance to play for the Cabo Verde national team. However, the player initially ignored the message, thinking it was spam because he didn't know Portuguese.
The manager then resent the message in English, and Lopes accepted. Now, the 33-year-old defender of Ireland's Shamrock Rovers club has become one of the heroes of the Cabo Verde national team, which defeated Eswatini 3-0 and qualified for the World Cup for the first time in its history.
The 2026 World Cup will be held in the summer in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
