Chelsea captain Reece James has admitted that his team lost the victory due to their own mistakes after the Champions League match against Qarabag in Baku (2:2).
Idman.Biz reports that, according to the defender, although the Londoners started the game at the champion level, the mistakes made determined the outcome of the match:
"Yes, it's disappointing. When we came to Baku, of course, we wanted to win. We started the game very well, took the lead in the score, and therefore it is very upsetting to lose the victory. The goals we conceded were unfortunate from our point of view. We gave away a penalty, and we almost gifted the other goal ourselves," James said in a statement on the club's website.
The captain emphasized that Chelsea could not react correctly to the decisive episodes of the game:
"We could not adapt well enough to some situations, and the goals we conceded were the result of our own negligence. As a team, we must definitely make progress in this area."
Reece James is sure that the last minutes of the game could have brought victory to the team:
"We had opportunities to win the match, but we could not use them. Therefore, all the blame lies only on ourselves. We should blame ourselves, not anyone else, for not being able to win three points."
The captain especially singled out young Brazilian footballer Estevao, who opened the scoring in the game:
"Estevao is an incredible football player, the future is entirely in front of him. He is still very young and our responsibility is to bring him down to earth, protect him and monitor his development so that he does not lose his health. He still has a long way to go, but we are very happy with his game and his presence in our team," added R. James.
It should be reminded that Qarabag and Chelsea each have seven points in the Champions League standings. The Aghdam club is currently 12th, while the Londoners are 15th. Qarabag will play its next game on November 25 against Italian champion Napoli.
