Irish forward Troy Parrott opened the scoring in the 17th minute. Parrott doubled his tally in the 45th minute.
In the 59th minute, Portugal's forward and captain Cristiano Ronaldo received a straight red card. The referee initially showed the 40-year-old player a yellow card for hitting defender Dara O'Shea in the back with his elbow, but after reviewing the incident on the monitor, he sent him off the field.
After five rounds, Ireland has seven points and is third in Group F. Portugal has 10 points and is in first place.
