Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation, answered the question about whether Vladimir Putin could attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup if he received an invitation from US President Donald Trump.
"Why not," Peskov said.
Some time ago, Trump said that he could invite Vladimir Putin to the upcoming World Cup. At the same time, the politician added that it depends on "how events develop."
The 2026 World Cup will be held in three countries: the USA, Canada, and Mexico. 48 national teams will participate in the competition, divided into 12 groups of four teams each. The participants who take the first two places, as well as the eight best teams that take third place, will advance to the playoff stage of the World Cup. In addition, a new stage will be added to the 2026 World Cup - the 1/16 finals stage.
