"I have been saying the same thing to my close circle since day one. I have never played any betting games."
This was stated by Mert Çelik, a former football player of the Azerbaijani national team who played for "Neftçi" and "Sabail" clubs, in an interview with "Report" regarding the mention of his name in the betting games issue that has dominated the agenda of Turkish football.
We present that interview:
The 25-year-old "Sivasspor" football player, who said he regretted what happened, said that he expects an invitation from the Azerbaijani national team again in March.
- What can you say about your name being mentioned in betting games?
- I have been saying the same thing to my close circle since day one. I have never played any betting games. I was expecting everything to come out soon. Finally, the truth came to light. What bothered me the most was the fact that my name was mentioned in such a matter.
- As a result, you were removed from football for 45 days...
- Again, overcoming this process with the lightest punishment gives me some comfort. I plan to forget these events soon and come back stronger. I accept the decision normally.
- In general, what was the reason for accusing you in this matter?
- The reason for the issue was an account I opened in my childhood and was unaware of its existence. No bets were made from this account. But it turns out that even if there is an account and no bets are made, a penalty is applied. I didn't know that. The Turkish Football Federation also imposed the lowest penalty, 45 days.
- Did you know that the incident caused a great resonance in Azerbaijan as well?
- Yes. That's why I felt regret.
- Finally, you participated in the preparatory game between Azerbaijan and the Belarus national team. Later, you did not appear in the national team. Do you think the reason you were not called up to the team is related to this issue?
- This issue has nothing to do with the national team. I have received invitations several times this season. Both Fernandu Santos and Aykhan Abbasov included me in the list. "Sivasspor" was also aware of this. But at the last moment I was not included in the squad for the official game.
- What are you planning to do in 45 days?
- Of course, I will work non-stop. I will do my best both for "Sivasspor" to reach the Super League and to be invited to the Azerbaijani national team.
- Did you have a conversation with the "Sivasspor" management?
- The "Sivasspor" management knew from day one that I was innocent. Because they saw that my file was clean. The club president and coaching staff said that the "Sivasspor" community was behind me. This motivated me a lot. As a result, it happened as they said and I will continue to wear the "Sivasspor" uniform.
- What about from Azerbaijan, did anyone contact you?
- No, that didn't happen.
- Do you think that the current situation will prevent you from being called up to the Azerbaijani national team again?
- I don't think this situation will cause problems in the future. Because I am innocent. I have no connection with betting games. I believe that I will be called up to the team again in March. I want to come back and contribute to the Azerbaijani national team.
