"Referees are the same in every country. They also make mistakes. Sometimes these mistakes are excessive, especially in games of big teams."
This was stated by former "Neftchi" player Mark Tamas in an interview with futbolinfo.az.
The 31-year-old defender spoke about his time in Azerbaijan from the summer of 2023 to January 2025 and a number of other issues.
We present this interview.
– How is your career going at Diosgyor?
– Everything is fine. I am currently playing in my homeland – Hungary. I am happy about that.
– Do you have the opportunity to watch Neftchi's games?
– I can't watch the games regularly, but I am aware of the results. Now I am happy to see that they are winning some matches. They have not lost in the last games. I know that many changes have taken place. I believe that if everything continues like this, they will achieve their desires.
– Under the leadership of head coach Yuri Vernidub, the team has not lost for 7 games. Do you think he can take Neftchi to the European Cups with the current squad?
– Why not? You have to fight for it. Anything is possible in football.
– The team has famous players like Vincent Aboubakar. How would you compare the current squad with Neftchi in your time?
– I think we also had a very strong squad in our time. In the 2023/2024 season, we were almost going to finish the season in second place. But because we lost to Sabah in the last round, we finished the championship in 5th place. Because of this, our desire to get a ticket to the European Cups did not come true.
– Recently, Neftchi has been facing problems with referee decisions. Are there any complaints about refereeing in Hungary?
– Referees are the same in every country. They also make mistakes. Sometimes these mistakes are excessive, especially in games of big teams. I can't say the reason openly. I don't think about it much.
– Is there anyone you still keep in touch with from Neftchi?
– I don't have contact with many players from the squad because the team has been almost completely updated. But I talk to some people working at the club from time to time.
– This season, Sabah is considered one of the main championship contenders along with Qarabag. Do you think this is possible?
– I think Sabah will be the champion of the Premier League this year.
– What memories do you have of Azerbaijan?
– I only have good memories. I love both Baku and the people there very much!
