Maksim Mitrofanov, the Secretary General of the Russian Football Union (RFU), spoke about Russia's possible return to the world stage, noting that it is unlikely before the 2026 World Cup. Sport24.az reports that the functionary made a statement to TASS regarding this:
"The FIFA and UEFA congresses always take place in a warm and friendly atmosphere. At the last congress, FIFA showed great interest in countries that actively offered various options for friendly matches, and in general, there was a warm attitude towards us.
But I think it is impossible for us to participate in international competitions before the World Cup. But it seems to me that we can participate in Euro 2028. I think there is a chance for that."
It should be noted that the Russian national team has been suspended from participating in international competitions since February 2022.
