The historic 3:2 victory of Aghdam's "Garabagh" club over "Benfica" in the first round of the Champions League group stage not only impressed football fans, but also those who love other sports.
These words were said by Shahin Atamov, the head coach of the Azerbaijani national karate team, in an interview with Idman.biz after yesterday's game.
"I can't find the words - emotions are overflowing! If it were up to me, I would put up a statue to Gurban Gurbanov. It is difficult to express what "Garabagh" did last night. Apart from the victory of the Aghdam team, few believed in a draw. But they did it! As a coach, Gurban Gurbanov and his methods are simply the gold standard for any sport," said Atamov.
The head coach also spoke about the preparation of the karate fighters and the team's future plans.
"We are currently preparing intensively for very serious competitions, and such positive emotions only motivate our karate fighters. We have the CIS Games, the qualifying tournament for the World Championship, then the Islamic Games, and finally the World Championship in Egypt at the end of November. I hope that our karate fighters will not perform weaker than our football players in the world arenas, our guys have the potential for that," Atamov added.
