Hannes Halldorsson is the only Icelandic footballer to have played in the Azerbaijan Championship. The 41-year-old former goalkeeper wore the uniform of "Qarabag" in the 2018/2019 season. Halldorsson, who ended his career in 2022, participated in 77 matches as part of the Icelandic national team from 2011-2021.
Idman.Biz reports that the goalkeeper shared his thoughts with the AFFA press service about the Azerbaijan-Iceland game to be held as part of the 2026 World Cup qualifying round.
– What are your expectations from the match between Azerbaijan and Iceland national teams?
– The game will be difficult. Iceland performed very well in Reykjavik, but Azerbaijan always plays strong at home. The result recorded in the match against Ukraine at their home ground shows this. Therefore, a very difficult match awaits us.
– Can this meeting be considered decisive for Iceland in terms of the fight for second place in the group with Ukraine?
– Yes, it is a completely decisive game. Iceland must win to keep their hopes alive until the last round.
– After the first game in Reykjavik, the head coach of the Azerbaijani national team changed. Do you think we can see a different scenario this time?
– Yes, it will definitely be different. Azerbaijan is stronger at home and a new head coach usually brings additional motivation to the team. Iceland must be aware of this and put all their strength into the game.
– You wore the uniform of "Qarabag" in Azerbaijan in the 2018/2019 season, and several footballers from that team are now members of our national team. Does this make the game more difficult or emotional for you?
– Yes, this makes the match more interesting for me. I watched the meeting in Reykjavik. It was nice to see Shahruddin Mahammadaliyev, Mahir Emreli and other former teammates on the field. Shahruddin made some great saves and actually did his best in that game.
– How do you remember your days as a football player in Azerbaijan?
– I look back on my days in Baku with great and fond memories. It was a very valuable experience in my life. I am happy to have explored Azerbaijan with my family. I am still in touch with my close friend Nurlan Huseynov and send him my regards.
– Finally, what are your thoughts on Qarabag's performance in the UEFA Champions League this season?
– I am very happy for Qarabag's success. The results they have achieved this season are amazing and this shows how difficult the game will be for Iceland. Qarabag is a big club and I wish them success in the future.
