Former captain and goalkeeper of the Bulgarian national football team, Borislav Mikhailov, has died at the age of 63.

He was hospitalized in November 2025 after suffering a stroke.
Mikhailov played for the national team from 1983 to 1996. During this time, he played 102 matches, participated in the World Championships in 1986 and 1994, as well as the European Championship in 1996. At the club level, he played for Levski, Belenensesh, Mulhouse, Botev, Reading, Slavia Sofia and Zurich.
The Bulgarian national team sensationally reached the semi-finals at the 1994 World Cup in the USA, defeating Germany (2:1) in the quarter-finals and eventually finishing fourth. Borislav Mikhailov was the goalkeeper of that team.
From 2005 to 2019 and from 2021 to 2023, he served as the head of the Bulgarian Football Union.
