Florentino Perez, the head of the Spanish club "Real Madrid", played a crucial role in the election of Joan Laporta as the president of "Barcelona".
Idman.Biz reports that this was reported by "El Confidencial".
According to the information, during the presidential elections, Laporta was required to deposit 124.6 million euros (250 million AZN) into the club's accounts. However, he did not have sufficient financial means to pay this amount.
At this point, Perez intervened in the process by directly contacting the bank's management. The bank initially hesitated to approve the payment. The reason was that "Barcelona" was experiencing a serious financial crisis at that time and could not guarantee that it would fulfill its obligations on time. Nevertheless, as a result of Perez's insistence, the bank eventually agreed.
According to the source, the main reason for the "Real Madrid" president to take this step was that he saw Laporta as an ally in the European Super League project. However, "Barcelona" later decided to withdraw from the project.
It should be noted that the creation of the European Super League was announced in April 2021. The project included the clubs "Real Madrid", "Juventus", "Barcelona", "Atletico", "Milan", "Inter", "Manchester United", "Manchester City", "Chelsea", "Liverpool", "Tottenham" and "Arsenal". After UEFA's sanction threats, the project was suspended and almost all of the participants withdrew from the Super League.
