Sir Alex Ferguson signed 105 players during his time at Manchester United and achieved various successes.
Lent.az reports, citing foreign media, that Bebe, Eric Djemba-Djemba, and Kleberson are often mentioned among his most unsuccessful transfers. However, he also attracted some of United's greatest players, notably Wayne Rooney, Eric Cantona, and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Ferguson has admitted that his biggest regret was not signing Alessandro Del Piero from Juventus.
The Italian striker impressed the Scotsman in 2002 during a match between Manchester United and Juventus. The coach made his second attempt in 2006.
"I contacted Juventus and the boy's agent. He refused even before hearing my offer, saying that Juventus was the best place for him and that, although he respected Manchester United, he could never betray the black and white colors. It's a pity, because I had never seen anyone like him again.
Even immediately after Italy's victory at the 2006 World Cup, I was interested in him. At that time, Real Madrid was after him, and considering Juventus' problems at the time, I thought there would be a fair fight between us and the 'Royal Club' for him.
So I called him directly: 'It's Alex, I would like to see you at United,' I said. 'You will be the star of the team and together we will win everything.' He laughed and replied: 'Sir, you know that nothing has changed since then.'
Although several well-known Juventus players left the club after being relegated to a lower league, Del Piero stayed and captained the team in Serie B. Despite a nine-point deduction, Juventus won the championship and Del Piero was the top scorer with 20 goals. After returning to Serie A, he extended his contract for two years and remained at the club until 2012.
Ferguson also recalled his later meeting with the Italian star: "I saw him again in 2008 and he hugged me. He apologized for refusing my offer. I put my hand on his shoulder and calmed him down: 'You wanted to save Juventus and you succeeded.'
When people always ask me which players I wanted to coach but never had the chance, I always answer: Alessandro Del Piero."
