However, just a minute later, Union's midfielder András Schäfer was sent off with a straight red card for a rough tackle on his opponent.
Taking advantage of their numerical superiority, the visitors completely changed the situation in their favor before the break. In the 31st minute, Olivier Deman equalized the score in the situation that arose after a corner kick. Just four minutes later, Jens Stage headed the ball into the goal, putting his team ahead.
Werder, maintaining their advantage in the second half, increased the difference in the 66th minute with a goal from Mark Gröll. In the last seconds of the match (90+4), 18-year-old Patrice Chovet scored his first goal in the Bundesliga, making the score a rout.
Thanks to this victory, Daniel Thioune's players, having reached 25 points, moved up from the 16th place (relegation zone) to 13th place in the standings. Union Berlin remained in 10th place with 28 points.
