Iceland national team's head coach Arnar Gunnlaugsson spoke about the match against the Azerbaijan national team in the qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup.
Idman.biz reports with reference to Sportinfo.az that the 52-year-old expert stated that they want to start the qualifying round with a victory.
Gunnlaugsson said that they need fan support in the home match:
"The game against Azerbaijan will be a special moment for me. This is my first match at the Laugardalsvöllur stadium. It is a very big event for me and my family. This stadium is now up to world standards."
The head coach emphasized that winning the home game against Azerbaijan is extremely important.
"On paper, Azerbaijan may be shown as the weakest team in the group. But everything becomes clear on the field. I know that the stadium will be full for the match against France. But fan support against Azerbaijan would also be invaluable for us. Let's work together to qualify for the World Cup," Gunnlaugsson said.
The Iceland national team will face Azerbaijan in Reykjavik on September 5 and France in Paris four days later.
