Arif Asadov, a well-known Azerbaijani football expert and former head coach of our national team, has commented on the news that AFFA has offered him to coach the Azerbaijan U-21 national team.
Arif Asadov said in his statement to Idman.biz that he has not been told anything about this issue.
Commenting on the reports that he is a candidate for the position of head coach of the youth team, he said:
"I have not received any offer from AFFA yet. Now, whatever position becomes vacant, a coach who does not work anywhere is immediately assigned there (laughs – Ed.). But I repeat again, no one has contacted me."
Arif Asadov was asked, "What would be your answer if such an offer came?"
"Let's not talk about it yet. Let's talk about it when there is an offer from AFFA," the expert answered.
It should be noted that according to media reports, AFFA has reached an agreement with the head coach of the youth team, Aykhan Abbasov, and he will be announced as the head coach of our national team in the near future. After that, the association started looking for a new head coach for the U-21 team. Among the candidates are former assistant coach, Italian Gianni De Biasi, and Arif Asadov, who worked in the Azerbaijani national team in 2020–2023.
Let us remind you that after the 0:5 defeat against the Icelandic national team in the qualifying round of the 2026 World Championship, the Portuguese Fernando Santos was removed from the post of head coach of the national team. In the next qualifying match – against Ukraine (1:1) – the team was led by Aykhan Abbasov. Our national team will play its next two qualifying matches against France (October 10) and Ukraine (October 13) on the road.
