"I think we will fight well and we will have a claim in the group."
Idman.Biz reports that these words were said by Turqay Zeytingöz, sports director of the Azerbaijan Basketball Federation (ABF), while evaluating the rivals of the national women's basketball team in the preliminary qualifying round of EURO-2029.
He stated in his statement to AZERTAC that the Swiss national team can be shown as the favorite of the group: "This team is in the first basket in the draw and is a more experienced team. Iceland and Ireland are closer rivals to us in terms of level. Currently, the average age of our team is 17. In this regard, the main goal in the tournament is for young players to gain international experience."
The ABF official noted that the national team is strong enough to compete with other teams: "I think we will fight better in this tournament and play head-to-head games with our opponents. If our experienced basketball players playing abroad can also join the team, I highly appreciate our chances in the group."
According to T. Zeytingöz, it is necessary to wait a little to give a final opinion regarding the teams' lineups: "The first games will be held in November. By that time, the composition of all teams will be clarified and it will be possible to make a more objective assessment after that."
It should be noted that the Azerbaijani national team will compete with the national teams of Switzerland, Ireland and Iceland in Group A. The games will be held on November 8-18 this year and February 7-17, 2027.
