16-year-old Indian basketball player Hardik Rati died during training in Haryana state.
Idman.Biz reports that the teenager died when, while hanging from the basketball hoop after throwing the ball into the basket, a broken metal support collapsed and fell on his chest. Several people immediately rushed to his aid and lifted the collapsed structure.
According to the New Indian Express, the teenager died from his injuries, although he was taken to the hospital within 20 minutes.
His brother said that local officials had been repeatedly warned about the poor condition of the structure, but the equipment was never replaced.
The Haryana authorities have announced an investigation. According to media reports, this is the second such incident in the region in recent days.
The deceased basketball player was among the candidates to be invited to the U-16 national team of his country.
The sports hall where the incident took place has been suspended.
