The Azerbaijan team has started to adapt to the Universiade, which will kick off today in the Rhine-Ruhr region of Germany.
Idman.biz reports that one of the most historically and culturally interesting and dynamic regions of Europe has been chosen to host this sporting event.
The Rhine-Ruhr region covers a large part of Western Germany. In addition to the cities hosting the competitions - Bochum, Duisburg, Essen, Mülheim and Hagen - it also includes Düsseldorf, the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia. One of the most famous cities is Cologne - with a population of over one million and known for its famous Cologne Cathedral. Another famous city is Dortmund, known for the "top" club "Borussia".
All the Universiade cities are located in part of the former Ruhr region. This is Germany's largest urban agglomeration with a population of over 5 million. These cities are located connected to each other from west to east, and guests mainly understand the replacement of one city by another from road signs. The region takes its name from the Ruhr River that flows through it. This river previously allowed for the cheap and efficient transportation of coal and industrial products.
The Ruhr region has developed under the influence of the mining industry for centuries.
Although the region is currently one of the main centers of industry and trade, the main factor that gave impetus to its development was coal mining. In the 19th century, rich coal and ore deposits, steel production and processing industry turned this area into one of the largest industrial agglomerations in Europe. The mining industry shaped both the economic and cultural face of the region and influenced the mindset of the local population. Although this field has now ceased operations, cities bear traces of the factories and mines around which they once expanded. During the period of industrial development, many people moved to the Ruhr region from other parts of Germany and from foreign countries - especially from Poland, Turkey, Italy and Greece. For this reason, the coexistence of different cultures is still observed in the region today.
The city of Essen is considered a symbol of change and innovation in the region. Zollverein, once the world's largest coal mine, is located here. This object is currently included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. This and other industrial facilities have now been transformed into cultural centers, museums and event venues.
Today, the region is a center of science, research and universities. According to various sources, in addition to more than nine universities and technical colleges, there are also several technology centers operating here.
Essen will be the city where the main competitions of the Universiade will be held, and the Azerbaijani team is also located here. Athletes started their first training sessions today and will join the competitions in the near future.
