Interview of Ahmet Levent Gulenç, a football player of "Qarabag" U-19 team, to Prosport.Az
– Although your name and surname are Turkish, you speak Azerbaijani so well, as if you are from here...
– Ahmet and Levent are the names of my uncles. My mother and father are Turkish. I was born in Istanbul – Fatih. But I have been in Azerbaijan since I was 2 years old. My father has an air conditioning company in Baku. That's why we live in Baku. I learned Azerbaijani while I was with children in the neighborhood. I graduated from Azerbaijan-British College in Baku. That's why I also know English very well.
– You were not there when this team became champion in Estonia last year. You were at an international tournament with "Qarabag" for the first time. What are your thoughts?
– This is a great tournament. The organizers have problems with accommodation and food. But such a problem is valid for everyone.
– Where did you play before "Qarabag"?
– I studied at Buckswood School in Hastings, near Brighton in England, for 2 years. At that time, I played for the local semi-amateur team. Later, I received an offer from a 4th league team. They offered a 2-year contract. But my transfer there did not work out.
– Why?
– I was too young then. I didn't have a residence permit. They said that either the parents had to come and live in Britain. For this reason, my transfer there did not happen. Then I returned to Azerbaijan. At the beginning of last season, I moved to "Qarabag". First, I went to training with the U-19s. Then, according to my age, I started to continue with the U-17s.
– What are your performance indicators in the championship?
– I play in the central attacking midfielder and number 8 positions. I scored 13 goals. I have also made the same number of assists. We lost the championship by 1 point. God willing, we will fix this next season.
