Former Barcelona head coach Xavi has revealed the reason why Argentinian striker Lionel Messi could not return to the team.
According to Lent.az, he said that Messi's return did not happen because of club president Joan Laporta:
"The president had started negotiations with Leo's father regarding a contract, and we even got permission from the league management. But in the end, it was the president who stopped everything. Laporta literally told me: if Leo comes back, a real war will start against him, and he cannot allow that."
The striker left the Catalan club in the summer of 2021.
Messi is a Barcelona academy graduate. He played for the main team from 2003 to 2021. During this time, he played 835 matches and scored 709 goals. Messi won the Champions League four times with Barcelona, became world champion with the Argentine national team in 2022, won the Copa America twice, and also won the Ballon d'Or eight times.
