Asian Football Confederation General Secretary Windsor John has commented on the Iranian national team's withdrawal from the 2026 World Cup. The official gave a statement to the AP portal:
"The Iranian national team is part of our confederation. We want them to play in the World Cup. As far as we know, Iran will play.
This is a very emotional moment. Everyone is talking a lot. Ultimately, only the Iranian Football Federation will decide whether they will play or not.
Today, the federation informed us that they will go to the World Cup."
It should be noted that some time ago, Iranian Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamali announced that the national team would not participate in the 2026 World Cup after air strikes by the US and Israel on Iranian territory following the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
The Iranian national team is in Group G together with Belgium, Egypt and New Zealand.
