"Dinamo Moscow" player Ulvi Babayev has refused to represent the Azerbaijan national team.
According to Idman.Biz, 21-year-old Babayev was recently called up to the Russian youth team and included in an expanded list of 38 players. He previously played for Russia's under-15 and under-16 teams, making nine appearances.
However, according to FIFA rules, a player can change sporting citizenship if he has not played for another country's senior national team in official matches.
Sportinfo.az, citing its own sources, reports that AFFA representatives have repeatedly tried to contact the player in the last two or three years, but he avoided meetings for various reasons. The latest attempt was made through the player's father, who said that he sees his son's future only in the Russian national team. Negotiations were subsequently stopped.
