UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin has stated that he does not support the disqualification of Russian football teams from participating in international competitions. Sport24.az reports that the head of the supreme football body made a statement to Politico in this regard:
I am not in favor of removing athletes from competitions. What can an athlete tell his government to stop the fighting? It's very, very difficult. According to my calculations, Russian athletes have already been out of competitions for three and a half years. Have the fighting stopped in Ukraine? No."
In February 2022, UEFA and FIFA suspended the participation of Russian clubs and teams in international tournaments due to the situation in Ukraine.
