UEFA has imposed disciplinary sanctions on Benfica following the first leg of their Champions League Round of 16 play-off match against Real Madrid.
Lent.az reports that the UEFA press service has released a statement.
Benfica has been fined 40,000 euros for the racist and discriminatory behavior of its fans. In addition, the club has been banned from selling 500 tickets for their next home match under UEFA auspices. Furthermore, the club has been fined an additional 8,000 euros for fans using laser pointers.
The match was held in Lisbon on February 17 and ended in a 0-1 victory for Real Madrid. Vinicius Junior, who scored the only goal of the match, ran towards the Benfica fans after the goal and made provocative gestures towards them. Vinicius then complained to the referee about racist insults.
